Monday, March 13 - Hip Hop Helps - The Wrap

Thanks to all who attended Hip Hop Helps: Raise. It was a stellar night. Everyone came off very nice. Big ups to Relic the Oddity who tore the house down! ShadK and crew were very nice - it's always a great show with SK. And, if we can bring, the ILL SEER and Runaway set was fantastic! It was a super night for Laurier as many alumni came back to rock. Big ups to Rogers Community TV for covering the event. Stay tuned to us for when the segment will air.

RAISE! There are still a grip of CDs left so we're gonna start pushing them. Check out the Raise page for the CD tracklisting, information, concert blog and pictures from the show. Stay tuned to the Prophetic Poetic page for upcoming shows and ways to get your hands on this CD! $5 for 21 delicious tracks from ShadK, ILL SEER, Runaway, Relic, Deepspace 5, Braille, Lightheaded, Promise, Nifty and more! Contact jon@propheticpoetic.com for more information.

Saturday, March 11 - Official Launch of the mix CD Hip-Hop Helps: Raise!!! Local hip-hop acts Come Together in a Fundraiser for ROOF. This night will mark the third hip-hop fundraising concert Hip-Hop Helps, a student-organized charity project designed to connect those interested in social justice. The concert will be held at Wilf's on the Wilfrid Laurier Unviversity campus and will feature some bright stars of the K-W community. Headlining the event is ShadK, Laurier alumnus and winner of 91.5 The Beat's "Rhythm of the Future" talent contest in 2004. Since his victory, he has produced a well-received debut album, "When This Is Over", and is opening for acts such as Common and Kardinal Offishall. Also featured are local rapper Titus, Brampton's Relic the Oddity, college professor and rapper ILL SEER, and Laurier graduates Soul Natural (Natural Cause), the Runaway, spoken word artist Amber Long, and DJ Crown J. Doors Open @ 9pm. $3 at door, $8 with CD. Looks like Rogers Community Television Waterloo might be in the house, so you might find yourself on TV after coming out.

Raise features songs and exclusive freestyles from: Braille, Lightheaded, Deepspace 5, ShadK, Titus, ILL Seer, Runaway, Promise, NIFTY, Manafest, Reconcile, and more! Mixed by Radio Laurier alum The Runaway!

The project, Hip-Hop Helps, was organized in 2003 by then Laurier student Jon Corbin. While he currently moonlights as The Runaway, Corbin began the events with much more in mind than just a fun concert. "I realized that there were many people on campus who were socially conscious, but they were in many different areas. I used the concert as a tool to get people into the same space. That way, our efforts could be connected and combined."

The first two years of the concert saw thousands of dollars raised for World Vision, through the 30 Hour Famine. The concert also featured a compilation CD sold at the show with all proceeds to World Vision. This year, the concert is back, with another CD - with all proceeds going to ROOF (Reaching Our Outdoor Friends). The limited edition CD, titled Raise, features contributing artists from the KW area, Toronto, and the United States, and will be sold only at the concert, and other shows promoted by Prophetic Poetic Productions, which involves Corbin and ILL SEER.
